Translated from Sanskrit as the “Science of Life” Ayurveda was mentioned in the Upaveda of the Atharva, the fourth Veda. It is described as knowledge of self-healing.
The basic philosophy of Ayurveda is based on the Panca Maha Bhuta (five elements theory). The universe as well as the human body is made up of five elements, namely Space (Akasha), Fire (Agni), Air (Bayu), Water (Jal) and Earth (Pertiwi). These elements combine to form controlling forces or biological humours called “Dosha”. These dosha are responsible for sustaining the living body on its normal state and there are 3 types of the body : Vata is a combination of air and ether, Pitta is the forceful combination of water and fire and Kappa is a combination of earth and water.
Each person is born with a basic constitution or genetic make-up called “Prakrti”. If there is changing nature or situation in the body during one’s life, imbalance will occurs, this imbalance nature in the body may become a disease or illness. However everything is interrelated in this world, “the mind and the body”, “ the person and the universe as wells as the nature itself”, “the disease and the life style”. They are supporting each other and depending each other. But, the body has the power to help itself by the support of nature.
hus, Ayurvedic theraphy is mainly based on herbs, plants, flowers, fruits, vegetables and all vegetation that is plenty grows around us. If this natural sources mixed with traditional massage, through a specific treatment (special diet, lifestyle habit, control stress level, yoga & meditation, acupressure) this can cleansing the body and mind and simply help the healing process of the body.
